Nihang stabs with a kirpan; was held in Ludhiana

Officials said Nihang was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stabbing a relative and injuring four others using a kirpan at Suraj Nagar, Tedi Road in Shimlapuri.

They added that 50-year-old Nirmal Singh was killed in the attack stemming from an old rivalry.

According to police, accused Jatinder Singh of Sangowal fled after the incident but was later arrested. According to the police, the victim was a carpenter.

According to the police, the condition of one of the victims, Manjit Singh, was said to be serious and the other three – Vijay, Vishwajit and Balraj Singh – stable.

Police said Nirmal Singh and other victims tried to intervene after the accused attacked his brother, Manjit Singh, with a kirpan.

Shimlapuri Station House Officer (SHO) Balwinder Singh said the accused and the victim are relatives and live in the same area. The SHO added that they accused each other of “abuse and urinating at the main gates”.

He said that the accused and the victim had an argument for some reason in 2023, after which Nirmal Singh and Manjit Singh filed a complaint and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Jatinder Singh.

Later, Jatinder and his family sold their house and moved to Sangowal village. Police said that Jatinder had become Nihang around six months ago and added that the accused had been visiting Suraj Nagar to meet other relatives in the area.

The SHO added that on Sunday, Jatinder came to Suraj Nagar and attacked Manjit. The other victims tried to intervene, after which the accused also attacked them, he added.

He said that Manjit and Nirmal sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital where, on arrival, doctors declared the latter dead.

According to the inspector, a murder case is pending against the accused. Police are interrogating the accused to find out what prompted him to attack the victims, he added.
