Several states have announced school holidays on the occasion of Chhath, which will be celebrated next week. Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya (Mother Shashti). This year, Chhath Puja will be celebrated on November 7. Delhi, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and a few other states sometimes declare holidays.

Chhath Puja Festival: List of states that have declared school holidays

This year the holiday will be celebrated on November 7. A vibrant festival dedicated to the Sun God and is celebrated with great fervour in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand etc. The festival lasts for four days during which the devotees perform various rituals such as fasting, bathing in rivers and prayers at sunrise and sunset. Here is the complete list of states and union territories (UTs) that have declared school holidays on this day.

Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Friday declared November 7 as a public holiday on the occasion of Chhath Puja 2024. In an official statement, Prime Minister Atishi said that the Delhi government has decided to observe November 7 as a public holiday on Chhath Puja, enabling the Purvanchal Community to celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm .

Apart from schools, all government departments will be closed on November 7 in New Delhi due to the Chhath festival.

Bihar

The Bihar government has announced a four-day school holiday in view of the upcoming Chhat Puja festival 2024. According to Jagran, the state government has declared a school holiday from November 6 to 9.

Jharkhand

There is no official information about school holidays in the state in connection with the Chhath Puja festival. As per the notification issued by the Comptroller and Auditor General, November 7 has been declared as a holiday reserved for central government employees in Jharkhand.

Uttar Pradesh

Most schools are likely to remain closed on November 7 to mark the Chhath Puja celebrations on that day. So far, the state government has not officially announced that there will be a school holiday in UP on this day.

Apart from school holidays, banks will be closed on November 7 on the occasion of Chhath Puja celebrations in Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Chhath Puja festival will be extended by one more day i.e. November 8 in Bihar and Jharkhand.
