Man driving under the influence crashed car into Elmhurst police car: prosecutors

A Bellwood man faces serious charges after he crashed into a police car in Elmhurst over the weekend while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Jordan Boyd, 24, was charged with a number of serious crimes, including aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury, criminal damage to government property, driving under the influence and possession of open alcohol as a driver, prosecutors said.

The incident occurred Sunday evening when police officers responded to reports of a fight at 100 South Grace Avenue in Elmhurst. As they approached the scene, Boyd reportedly got into his car and drove straight to a marked police car, causing the airbags to deploy.

Prosecutors said the crash left the officer in the car with a deep wound to his face before pepper spray was deployed, exploding and burning the left side of his back and abdomen. The officer was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Boyd was also arrested and taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.

Police said Boyd showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol. His blood alcohol content was allegedly measured at 0.28, more than three times the legal limit.

“The allegations that Mr. Boyd was under the influence of alcohol and intentionally drove his vehicle into an oncoming police car, injuring the officer inside, are shocking,” said Robert Berlin, DuPage County State’s Attorney. “My office fully supports DuPage County law enforcement. The type of conduct alleged in this case, which places law enforcement officers at risk, will not be tolerated and will be pursued with the full force of the law.”

Boyd remains in custody after a judge approved a request to release him on bail ahead of trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 2.
