Callie Pounders, a softball star from Corinth, dies in a car accident

Callie Pounderssenior at Corinth High School Corinth, who led the softball team to the 2024 state championship, died Monday morning in a car accident, according to the school district.

According to Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell, the crash occurred on County Road 408. The car Pounders was driving went off the road; she overdid it, trying to get back on the bike, but hit a tree. She died at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.

Pounders was 17 years old.

“It is with great sadness that I report that one of our students, Callie Pounders, died in a car accident this morning,” Corinth Principal John Barnett announced on social media. “We are devastated by this loss and mourn with the student’s family and friends.

“In times like these, we must continue to connect and support each other as a Corinthian community. At this time, we respect the family’s privacy and time to grieve. If there is anything we can do to help the family as a community, we will pass this information on to you. We are deeply saddened by this loss and will do our best to continue to care for and care for each other.”

The senior pitcher helped lead the way Corinth to the MHSAA Class 5A state title in May with two games over East Centralfirst in school history. Pounders pitched all 14 innings of the championship series, allowing four earned runs and striking out 20.

She had a 1.29 earned run average and 229 strikeouts in 2023-24 and was named to the Clarion Ledger All-State second team as a pitcher. She also competed on the Corinthian volleyball and powerlifting teams.
