Schools on Barrier Island are waiting to reopen as repairs continue

Sanibel School could reopen as early as next week, pending results of indoor air quality (IAQ) tests. Families were notified last week of their potential return date and if they pass air quality tests this week, students will be able to return to the building next week. Repair and stabilization work addressed water ingress, moisture spread and other structural issues, helping to prepare parts of the school for a safe reopening.

Fort Myers Beach Elementary School has a longer schedule. The water damage affected not only the floors but also the subfloor and required extensive repairs. To ensure the safety and functionality of the building, the entire floor installation will be replaced. While there is no set reopening date, the district hopes to have a tentative schedule by Friday.

Meanwhile, Sanibel School students are temporarily attending classes at Heights Elementary School and Fort Myers Beach students are temporarily attending classes at San Carlos Park Elementary School. Both schools are expected to reopen only after passing all necessary air quality tests, ensuring the safe return of students and staff.
