PORT SHEPSTONE – Police Officer in KwaZulu-Natal died allegedly at the hands of a colleague while conducting a tactical operation near Port Shepstone.

The incident reportedly occurred in Boboyi on the South Coast on Sunday, November 3, 2024. At approximately 10 p.m., an eight-person Public Order Police (POP) and K-9 Unit team were responding to domestic complaints in the area.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesman Phaladi Shuping he said Briefly News Law enforcement was then trying to locate the allegedly aggressive suspect.

“During tactical operations aimed at subduing the suspect, a stun grenade was used in one of the rooms of the house. The officer, believing she was being attacked, allegedly opened fire with his R-5 rifle, accidentally hitting two colleagues.

Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu Member of the K-9 unit who sustained injuries. We remain committed to supporting those affected by this tragedy and will do everything we can to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”

Shuping said the incident had been reported to IPID for investigation.

“The directorate is investigating culpable homicide and negligence in connection with the firearms allegations,” he said.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu responded to the incident, saying his department was committed to supporting those affected by the incident.

“And we will do everything in our power to prevent such incidents from happening in the future,” Mchunu said.

He encouraged increased caution during tactical operations, especially in high-risk situations.

“A full investigation into IPID is ongoing (and) we urge the directorate to expedite it to provide clarity and closure. (In the meantime) we (implore) all law enforcement teams to exercise maximum caution when planning and executing operations.” he added.
