Two Chinese citizens shot dead in Karachi – DW – 11/05/2024

On Tuesday, authorities said two Chinese nationals were injured in a shooting in Karachi, Pakistan.

Saudi newspaper Arabic news reported that the incident took place at a factory in Karachi’s SITE industrial zone.

“According to preliminary investigation, the guard opened fire after a heated argument with the Chinese nationals, resulting in the injury of two Chinese nationals,” Syed Asad Raza, deputy inspector general of police South, told Arab News.

No details were provided about the two victims.

They were taken to the Liaquat National Hospital in the mall. A hospital spokesman said they were both being treated and the condition of one of them was critical.

The identity or motive of the shooter was not immediately clear.

In October, two Chinese engineers were killed in a bomb attack near Karachi airport. The Baloch Liberation Army, a separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack.

China has often demanded greater security for its citizens working in Pakistan.

Many Chinese nationals live in Pakistan and work on projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). China recently urged Islamabad to increase security measures for its citizens.

Karachi is located in southwestern Pakistan, which is frequently subject to insurgent attacks against the government, army and Chinese interests.
