• Abia Police confirms attack on two police officers

Just when Anambra State seemed to have heaved a sigh of relief from the threat of insecurity, especially over the disturbing issue of faceless “unknown bandits”, coordinated attacks took place in Abatete and Ukpo communities yesterday.

Both communities in Idemili North and Dunukofia municipalities respectively became ghost areas as business and car activities stopped. The attackers destroyed property and killed dozens of people, setting fire to civic guard vehicles.

While efforts were being made to resume normal life and business in all Anambra communities, the attacks on Abatete that occurred around 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. by unknown armed assailants appear to have targeted security personnel.

The attackers attacked vigilantes attached to the Presidents General (PG) of both communities, killing three people. PG was seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention.

“We are praying for his recovery,” said a community leader.
One vigilante and an Okada rider were killed at the Ukpo community roundabout in Dunukofia Local Council.

“The attackers appeared out of nowhere, fired indiscriminately and shouted, ‘No Biafra, no freedom.’ We are still trying to analyze what happened,” some eyewitnesses said.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Police have launched an investigation into the attacks and are working to arrest the perpetrators.

“We condemn these heinous acts and assure the public that we will do everything in our power to bring justice to those responsible,” the source said.
Residents of Abatete and Ukpo are in shock, with many calling for an increased security presence.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, adding that the hoodlums would be arrested.

ALSO, Abia State Police Command has confirmed that two police officers of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at Base 4, Makurdi, Inspectors Dunna Jatau and Bala Mohammed, were attacked by armed assailants while on duty in Umuahia, the state capital.
