Houghton student suspended for alleged threats | News, sports, work

HOUGHTON – A Houghton High School student was suspended from work for the rest of the year at a special meeting earlier this month after allegedly threatening school safety.

In remarks after Monday’s regular meeting, Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Anders Hill did not specify the nature of the threat.

On November 7, the board met to consider disciplinary action against the student. At the request of the student’s parent, the board met in closed session to discuss the matter.

“Due to students’ discipline, we have to make a decision in an open session” – Hill said. “So the student was expelled, but all the deliberations and everything were done in camera.”

After a student’s parent requested a closed session, the board discussed the issue privately for 44 minutes. Back in open session, the board voted 6-0 to suspend.

The student will be prohibited from attending Houghton School until September 2, 2025.
