Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Victor Boniface could be sidelined for an extended period following an injury he suffered while on international duty.

Boniface performing in sports competitions against the Republic of Benin at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan and against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Nigeria qualification was sealed before a ball was kicked in both games, and yet the German striker amassed 107 minutes in both games, including a start against Rwanda.

Alonso provides an update on Boniface

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday’s match against Heidenheim, confirmed the striker’s injury.

“We will have to see how long he will be out. It’s a shame,” he said, quoted by the portal Bein Sports. “He has a thigh injury. Tomorrow, to Salzburg and maybe a little longer. We’ll have to wait and see.

“It’s too early to say, but we hope he can still play this year. We need to see recovery and improvement, but it’s not a matter of six or eight weeks.

The former Royal Union Saint-Gilloise striker is yet to score his first goal for the national team. He missed it AFCON 2023 due to a groin injury.

Atalanta’s plans for Lookman’s future

This was reported by YEN.com.gh Atalanta have devised a strategy for Lookman’s future in preparation for his inevitable departure after three seasons with the Italian Serie A club.

The club have set a benchmark asking price and identified a list of younger potential targets to spend half the money on as they look to revitalize the squad following his departure.

Boniface disappointed with CAF POTY’s disregard

Before, YEN.com.gh reported that Bonface expressed disappointment that he was not nominated for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.

CAF has published a list of 10 nominees for the prestigious award, including Super Eagles stars Ademoli Lookman and William Troost-Ekong making the cut. Conspicuously absent from the list was Boniface, who was part of the Bayer Leverkusen team that won the Bundesliga championship in the 2023/2024 season.
