A Big Lake man awaiting sentencing for sexual assault and was free on bail was accused of shooting his cousin’s fiancé in a car in north Minneapolis while her two young children sat in the backseat.

The children, one of whom was covered in blood, were taken away by a witness while their mother cradled the head of Joseph Milligan, 26, of Minneapolis.

Kinglewes Edward McCaleb VI, 20, was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting Thursday in Hennepin County District Court. He is being held on $1 million bail. In July, McCaleb pleaded guilty to fifth-degree sexual assault after being accused of raping and robbing a woman in Minneapolis earlier this year.

He was free on $100,000 bail at the time of the alleged shooting.

Danielle Molliver, his defense attorney in the sexual assault case, said the plea agreement included probation and no jail time. He was scheduled to be sentenced this week before he was arrested and held on probable cause for Milligan’s murder. She said her law firm is determining whether it will represent him in the case, but it is strictly resource dependent.

“I’m really shocked,” Molliver said of the murder charges, noting that one of the reasons McCaleb received a plea deal was because he had no criminal history. “He was a very humble young guy,” she said of McCaleb. “A little impressionable, but definitely not the guy who will be the first to cause trouble.”
