How did Anabel Segura’s parents die?

It was April 12, 1993, when the entire world turned upside down for the Segura-Foles family when 22-year-old student-athlete Anabel Segura Foles was kidnapped and murdered. However, as explained in Netflix’s “900 Days Without Anabel,” it is critical to note that her attackers actually omitted the reality of her fate during more than 20 phone calls to her family. In fact, they demanded a huge ransom of 150 million pesetas, while maintaining the position that she was safe and sound, and kept her parents’ hopes alive until the truth came to light in 1995.

Anabel Segura’s parents were the epitome of love and support

Although it is unclear when and where Anabel was born, we know that she came into this world as the eldest daughter, as well as the pride of Sigrid Foles and José Segura Nájera. The former is from Germany, and the latter is said to have first met her there when he was the director of his petrochemical company, unaware that they would soon fall in love. Thus, the couple eventually decided to happily tie the knot before welcoming two beautiful daughters into the world – Anabel and then Aleksandra (aka Sandra) – but some things changed by 1993.

Although the love between Sigrid and José never waned and their daughters never went astray, they changed in the sense that they moved to Spain in the early 1990s. In fact, the Segura-Foles family was living a comfortable life in the affluent Intergold neighborhood of La Moraleja in Madrid when, on April 12, 1993, Anabel was suddenly kidnapped while jogging. Her running around in her tracksuit with her Walkman was truly routine, but it’s painful to know that she had returned home a day early from a family ski holiday to prepare for her upcoming exams – if she hadn’t done so, she would likely still be alive.

Records show that Anabel’s parents returned to their shared home immediately after being informed of the incident and did everything in their power to ensure her safe return. They consistently supported her in every decision and served as her guide while she was with them, so of course they were now exploring every possible avenue to fight for her freedom. This included having a family friend serve as a point of contact with the kidnappers, holding press conferences, offering rewards when the attackers stopped communicating in June, and even appearing on news programs begging for her return.

Anabel Segura’s parents experienced a lot of pain before their death

Despite all of Sigrid and José’s efforts and extensive investigations by authorities, it was not until 1995, when public tips identified the ransom takers, that they learned the truth. In fact, they checked all possibilities to see if she had been chosen by someone close to Anabel or someone seeking revenge on her successful father, but the culprits turned out to be strangers. They kidnapped her randomly on that fateful day from an affluent neighborhood purely for financial gain, but within hours they strangled her to death because they had nowhere to keep her.

Therefore, Sigrid and José were of course devastated when the truth finally came out, but they remained quiet in public because they did not want to give Anabel’s killers any satisfaction. In the end, they were happy to bury their daughter and see the guilty brought to justice, but it didn’t provide them with closure due to the pointlessness of the whole ordeal. As such, the family subsequently decided to step away from the spotlight to mourn, and returned briefly in 2013 to assert that they did not forgive her killers when Emilio Muñoz publicly apologized after his early release from prison.

Sadly, Sigrid and José died shortly afterwards at their home in Alcobendas, Spain. While the former sadly passed away on March 14, 2016, the love of her life/her husband died on December 26, 2019. The cause of their death was never made public, however, we believe it was likely natural due to their age. They left behind a daughter, Alexandra, a son-in-law, Fermin Barquin, and two minor grandchildren, Ana and Alfonso.
