Gwinnett County police shot and killed a man during a foot chase in Norcross

Gwinnett County police say an officer shot and killed a man during a foot chase Friday evening near the intersection of Dawson Boulevard and McDonough Drive NW in Norcross.

According to Sgt. Collin Flynn, patrol officers assigned to the Crime Suppression Unit, were in the area when one of them tried to talk to a man walking through the parking lot.

The man did not want to stop and ran away. The officer gave chase and during the chase the man fell, dropping the gun to the ground. Sgt. Flynn said the officer ordered the man not to raise the gun. Despite the warning, the man reached for his gun, prompting the officer to open fire.

The man was hit in the hand, but managed to get up and continue running. Moments later, he lay on the ground and surrendered to other officers. He was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.

No additional details were released about the man or the officer involved in the incident. Sgt. Flynn confirmed the officer was not injured.

Because there were no fatalities in the shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will not be involved. However, the Gwinnett Police Department will conduct an internal review of the incident.
