Second week of school strikes in Perth and Kinross

Second week of school strikes in Perth and Kinross

BBC Scotland News also spoke to some council leaders who said the bid could not be reopened unless the Government helped.

The strike has caused practical problems for some parents in Perth and Kinross who have had to provide childcare or take time off work.

Many closed schools are providing distance learning so children can work from home

The council also said payments would be made to families who missed free school meals due to the strike.

Unison is planning a nationwide vote among local authority workers to see if they will also go on strike, but has not yet confirmed details.

Each vote would likely take several weeks. If the union was given a mandate to operate in more local government areas, it would have to give two weeks’ notice of a strike.

In the coming weeks, councils should find out how much money the Scottish Government plans to give them for next year and how much they will be able to increase council tax.

Unison insists it still wants pay to improve in the current financial year.

However, it is possible that the focus will shift to delivering a larger, “restorative” pay rise from April next year.
