The police are looking for an internal affairs official responsible for the fake marriage

On Monday, officers raided the premises of the probably secret Internal Affairs Bureau in the Berea district.

Three suspects were arrested on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

After receiving criminal information, an undercover policewoman was sent to pretend that she wanted to get married.

She sounded the alarm and officials came in who were on standby from SAPS, Hawks and Metro Police.

Officials say that when they reached the first floor, workers were already destroying documents.

Those running the company are accused of facilitating fake marriages by using the identity documents of unwitting South African women to marry undocumented foreigners.

Most of the people involved are outside the country and would apparently be issued spousal visas with which to enter South Africa.

The suspects allegedly demanded an amount of approximately R18,000 from the people.

Three suspects were arrested on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

KZN Police spokesman Robert Netshiunda says they believe it is a large syndicate.

“We found that an internal affairs official, who has probably been identified, cooperated with the suspects.

“So we believe he will be arrested and there may be more.”

They will appear in court soon.
