QB Fantasy Football Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em picks for Week 9 (2024)

QB Fantasy Football Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em picks for Week 9 (2024)

We’re entering the middle of the 2024 season. In Week 8, we saw the return of Jameis Winston, who threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his first start since 2022. Fun fact: Winston and Joe Flacco both threw for 300 yards in six of seven starts for the Browns , while Deshaun Watson didn’t pass for 300 yards in any of his 19 games.

We also saw Drake Maye leave Sunday’s contest after taking a blow to the helmet, so we’ll have to see how the rookie goes through the NFL’s concussion protocol before Week 9 beginsNO mention AND a groin injury suffered by Packers quarterback Jordan Love.

Two teams will also be on bye this week as Russell Wilson, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers take a much-needed break before the start of the playoffs. Now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to recap Week 9 of RotoBaller quarterback starts and sits.

Be sure to check out all of ours fantasy football rankings for 2024:

Bo Nix – QB, Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens

Don’t look now, but Bo Nix has averaged 21.7 fantasy points per game over the last month and has scored 20 or more fantasy points in three of the past four contests.

With a 7-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, 870 passing yards, two rushing scores and three wins, it’s Nix, not Jayden Daniels or Caleb Williams, who leads rookies in each of those categories in October. I was one of the doubters about Nix ahead of the 2024 season, but it’s time to give the man flowers.

Last week, Nix also became the first quarterback in Broncos history to finish a game with three passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and zero interceptions. Step aside, John Elway. The Nix situation has been in full swing since the beginning of Week 3, with the Broncos taking their record to 5-1 during that span.

The Broncos will face a tough challenge this week against the Baltimore Ravens, who were embarrassed by their loss to Jameis Winston and the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Fortunately, there’s no reason to believe Nix can’t continue his fantastic success against the Ravens’ secondary, which has allowed quarterbacks to score 21.33 fantasy points per game this season, which ranks third.

Baltimore has allowed a league-high 17 touchdown passes and has only intercepted five so far. Fantasy managers should expect good times this week for a quarterback who has been playing at Nix’s level since the end of Week 2.

Patrick Mahomes – QB, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

While Patrick Mahomes still isn’t the Mahomes of old, well, at least not for fantasy purposes, this week’s matchup with the Buccaneers is one of the more favorable ones ever.

Over the past four weeks, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have allowed the team the second-most fantasy points at the quarterback position, as opposing signal-callers average 24.39 fantasy points per game. The Buccaneers have thrown 1,191 passing yards and a league-high 11 passing touchdowns over that span, including four last week by Kirk Cousins.

It’s also worth remembering that Mahomes’ favorite target, Travis Kelce, also had a great start this week. Over the last four weeks, Tampa Bay has scored two touchdowns and gained 354 receiving yards. This works out to 18.85 fantasy points for each game played. Kelce will have 10 catches for 90 yards in Week 8, which could mean a deciding game in Week 9.

Sam Darnold – QB, Minnesota Vikings vs. Indianapolis Colts

Now that Sam Darnold has his head back after almost being decapitated in the end zone a week ago, he sees that his date with the Colts should be excited about managers’ fantasy.

On the season, the Colts have allowed the 10th most fantasy points to quarterbacks, at 16.84 per contest. This line hasn’t changed much over the past four weeks as the team has allowed 18.34 fantasy points per game to this position, which again ranks 10th. See where I’m going with this? Darnold has a top 10 fantasy matchup this week, no matter how you look at it.

Once again, Darnold proved to be a viable fantasy option, throwing for two scores and 240 yards in Thursday’s loss to the Rams, scoring 21 fantasy points, giving him over 16 fantasy points for the fifth time in seven contests this year. season.

Daniel Jones – QB, New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders

It doesn’t matter if it’s Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, or even Phil Simms. I’m not starting any of them this week against the Washington Commanders. Over the last four weeks, the commanders’ defense has figured some things out. During that span, they scored 9.38 fantasy points per game, the third-lowest mark in the league.

Before last week, Caleb Williams was posting back-to-back fantasy performances where he scored 23 fantasy points before dropping to less than 10 against the Commanders in a game in which he completed just 10 of 24 passes for 131 yards.

Whatever Dan Quinn sells, the defense buys it. Over the last three games, the Commanders’ defense ranks 10th in total points allowed (17.3), third in passing yards (168), second in passing touchdowns per game (0.3) and first in scoring goals by opponents per match (14.3).

Anthony Richardson – QB, Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings

I won’t say that Anthony Richardson left his team last week; I’ll let you all decide that’s for myself. I will say it and the numbers will prove it Richardson is a blip in the fantasy football world.

Richardson’s 12.3 fantasy points per game rank 28th in the league. Mason Rudolph of the Titans is averaging 11.9 fantasy points per game. Let that sink in for a minute.

But how bad is it for Richardson? Really stayed? I’m glad you asked. Since 2000, Richardson’s 50% graduation rate puts him in elite company. I’m talking about JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Tim Tebow and Akili Smith. Yes, a who’s who of NFL draft losers.

I will say that Richardson is only 22 years old and missed most of last season, so in some ways this is a continuation of his rookie season. At 22, I don’t remember what I did, but I know whatever it was, it wasn’t in the NFL.

His matchup is favorable this week as the Vikings have scored nearly 20 fantasy points per game over the last four weeks. That said, if he was “tired” last week, you can expect Brian Flores to get him running again this week with the Vikings blitz package.

CJ Stroud – QB, Houston Texans at New York Jets

Over the last four weeks, New York has held quarterbacks on average below 16 fantasy points, which many consider a sign of a profitable start.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with admitting you were wrong. A season after CJ Stroud took fantasy by storm and averaged 18.7 fantasy points per game, he averaged 15.3 fantasy points per game through eight weeks, which ranked 23rd.

Good news: Nico Collins will be back soon. Over the past two weeks without Collins, Stroud has scored just 17.7 fantasy points. The bad news is that Collins will not return this week and Stefon Diggs’ right knee buckled (no contact), leaving Stroud with Tank Dell, John Metchie III, Robert Woods and Xavier Hutchinson.

Until Collins returns, fantasy managers will likely have to bench Stroud and look for other options.
