Reckless driving incident ends with man threatening passerby with baseball bat: police

A 42-year-old man has been charged after police said he threatened passers-by following an argument with a female passenger.

Officers were called to Buchanan Boulevard and Fairlane Street around 4 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of an armed robbery involving a careless driver.

After speaking with the 32-year-old victim, police discovered that the 42-year-old man had been driving erratically during an argument with a woman sitting in his car. Police said the woman got out of her car near the intersection.

Police said a bystander stopped to check if the woman was OK. They allege the driver then swung a baseball bat at the victim and threatened to kill him.

Police said the victim was not injured in the attack.

Officers found the driver and his vehicle shortly thereafter. The suspect was arrested and found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. His driving license was also suspended.

Steve Byrne, 42, was charged with aggravated assault, uttering threats and driving while intoxicated.

He was released on recognizance. The allegations have not been tested in court.
