A tragic end: harassment leads to the suicide of a PhD student

The tragic incident occurred when a 28-year-old PhD student, engaged as a project assistant at a central research institute, allegedly died by suicide due to harassment over a financial dispute involving her father. On Friday, police revealed that two family members linked to her suffering were in custody along with her father.

The deceased’s mother lodged a complaint at the Nacharam police station, revealing that her husband had borrowed Rs 15 lakh on the false pretext that he wanted to provide a job to his family member in the institute. The accused family denied it, saying the student knew about the transaction, but her mother denied it.

Facing merciless humiliation and legal threats, the student succumbed to the pressure, ending her life on December 25. The police charged three people with abetment of suicide and violating provisions of the SC/ST Act after the deceased allegedly left behind a selfie video , naming people they believed were responsible.
