Atlanta Hotel Conflict That Injured an Officer Ended with the Gunman’s Arrest: Police

A doctor was arrested after an armed standoff with police that injured both he and an officer at a downtown Atlanta hotel.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says in a statement that 70-year-old Jay Berger was arrested after the fight. The agency said the Fulton County district attorney will review the case after Berger is released from the hospital.

Police were called to the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta after a report of a man pointing a gun at an employee, the statement said. An employee contacted the man after someone reported items had been thrown in the building’s 33rd floor hallway.

When officers arrived at the hotel, the GBI says Berger barricaded himself in his room and SWAT was called to the scene.

Berger allegedly began firing through the wall, and one SWAT officer was injured, possibly by shrapnel, the GBI says. The SWAT officer fired into the room.

Berger then went onto the balcony and began throwing items from it, the GBI said. While the suspect was on the balcony, a SWAT sniper fired a shot that hit Berger.

11 Alive informed that Berger is a doctor.
