White House awards University of Puerto Rico million in massive scholarships for Latinos

President Joe Biden signed an executive order Wednesday to provide $19 million subsidies to the schools that serve Latino students.

The University of Puerto Rico’s Rio Piedras campus received $5 million, with the rest shared by four other schools in Florida, Illinois and Texas. The money is part of the Department of Education’s Research and Development Infrastructure Grant program, which has an approximately $49 million endowment to be divided among historically black, tribally controlled, minority-serving colleges and universities. With the latest vote allocation, there’s less than a week left until Election Day.

Since Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office, Puerto Rico’s colleges and universities have received more than $1.1 billion in government funding, trailing Florida, Texas and California as the five states receiving aid. The administration has awarded more than $16 billion nationwide.

This comes after Harris’ campaign has stepped up to rally Latino voters in recent days since former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden. There’s comedian Tony Hinchcliffe he made a joke regarding Puerto Rico, which was poorly received. UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal said he thinks Harris’ record is worse than a joke. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona vaguely referenced the joke and the new order in a post to X.

“Our island is full of incredibly talented people who build patria every day,” Cardona wrote on Tuesday. “I am very proud to be Puerto Rican and to serve an administration that puts Puerto Rico at the forefront.”

Latino support for the Democratic Party has declined with each election cycle. Former President Barack Obama received 67% of the Latino vote in 2012, until former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received 66%, compared to President Joe Biden’s 59%.
