Seven injured in workers attack on JnU bus in Mohakhali

At least seven people, including a Jagannath University (JnU) bus driver, were injured this afternoon when a group of drivers and helpers allegedly attacked a bus carrying students near Mohakhali bus terminal.

Eyewitnesses said the altercation started when an Ulka-4 bus carrying JnU students reached the turnaround area in Mohakhali and found its path blocked by an Akota Transport bus.

Despite repeated honking, the Akota bus did not move, leading to a heated exchange of words between both drivers.

Soon after, around 50 drivers and helpers from Mohakhali Bus Terminal attacked the Ulka-4 bus using bricks, sticks and stones.

“We were stuck for a long time as the Akota bus was not running,” said Mizanur Rahman Sohag, a student of mass communication and journalism at JnU.

“When our driver asked them to clear the road, they attacked him with a stick. When we tried to intervene, the attackers turned on us, even throwing stones at female students.”

One of the most seriously injured was the driver of Ulka-4, Jagadish.

“They broke my arm, injured my body and even hit me in the eye. I demand justice for this unprovoked attack,” Jagadish said.

Md Omar Faruk, a transport administrator at the university, said: “Our driver is in a critical condition and we fear he may be blind in one eye. Several students were also injured. “Such attacks on university buses are unacceptable.”

In response to the incident, leaders of the Bus-Minibus Road Transport Workers’ Union Dhaka in Dhaka district met the projection body of JnU. Union office secretary Md Gias Uddin Bhuiyan said: “We strongly condemn the attack on the university bus. Initially, the driver and assistant involved in the incident were dismissed from work. An amount of Tk 12,900 for repairs, Tk 1,00,000 for the treatment of the injured driver, Tk 30,000 for the treatment of the injured helper and students and Tk 20,000 will be provided for the vehicle. penalties.

Md Tazammol Hoque, director of JnU, said discussions led to an agreement to repair the damaged bus, cover medical expenses for the injured and ensure those responsible were held accountable.

No arrests were reported as the attackers fled the scene.
