Two teenagers in custody after machete attack in Elmwood

A man in his 20s needed “significant medical care” in hospital after a machete attack by unknown teenagers, Winnipeg police say.

Police were called to Keenleyside Street around 7:45 p.m. on Dec. 27 for a report of an assault with a weapon, police said in a news release Sunday.

According to the release, a man in his 20s was found outside the home with serious injuries to his upper body and received medical attention, which included the application of two tourniquets.

Police believe the victim left the residence where he was socializing and “unknown” men from an upstairs apartment chased him outside, where he was attacked with bear spray and a machete, the release said.

He was taken to hospital in unstable condition and after “significant treatment” his condition was upgraded to stable, the release said.

A 14-year-old boy from Winnipeg has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in connection with the incident.

A 16-year-old Winnipeg boy also faces charges of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a weapon and five counts of failure to comply with a sentence in connection with the incident.

According to the release, both were in custody.

Sunday’s release said the Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477 or leave a tip via their website.
