A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured when an SUV was struck by a train in Bessemer

Police said a woman was killed and a man was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon when the driver of an SUV tried to pass a train at a railroad crossing in Bessemer.

Bessemer Police Det. Justin Burmeister said the incident happened around 11:30 p.m. at 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue.

The SUV was traveling west on 32nd and was about to pass when the intersections were cleared and lights were flashing. The vehicle was struck by a southbound Norfolk Southern train.

Both people were ejected from the SUV. It took a mile for the train to stop.

The woman’s death was confirmed on the spot, 50 meters from the intersection. The man was taken to UAB Hospital.

Their names have not been revealed.
