What Trump Means When He Makes Weird Comments About ‘Love Festivals’

Just like the controversy surrounding Donald Trump Event at Madison Square Garden As it turned out, the former president did what he usually does: He pretended there was no controversy.

The event was “the greatest evening anyone has ever seen politically” – boasted the Republican at his last rally in Pennsylvania, even as part of his own team drew the opposite conclusion.

But that wasn’t the only phrase he used. She reported to the Associated Press: :

Urged by some allies to apologize for racist remarks made by speakers at his weekend rally, Donald Trump took the opposite approach on Tuesday, saying it was an “honor” to attend such an event and calling the event a “love festival” – the same term he used to to describe the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol.

He didn’t look like he was joking.

Right off the bat, the AP’s point is a very important detail: Trump used the word “lovefest” earlier. during a conversation insurrectionist attack on the United States Capitol on January 6.

There’s an inescapable broader conclusion: When a GOP candidate talks about “love fests,” he’s sometimes talking about people who love him engaging in indefensible conduct.

Also noteworthy is the fact that many, incl some in his own partywe expected the former president to express some sort of regret over the Madison Square Garden fiasco. The more he celebrates his hate-filled gathering, the more obvious it becomes that he sees no need to repent.

But before we go any further, it’s worth taking another look at the remarks that Trump is so proud of. This was reported by The New York Times.: :

By the time former President Donald J. Trump took the stage at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, a parade of speakers had already gone on for hours, disparaging Latinos, Blacks, Palestinians and Jews; directing misogynistic comments at Vice President Kamala Harris; and repetitive language used by the Ku Klux Klan.

Report he then reinforced this assessment several examples from a far-right rally.

With that in mind, when Trump called the gathering a “love celebration” and said it was an “honor” to be “involved” in such an event, it was a clear endorsement of bigotry just days before Election Day.
