US blames onions for e.Coli outbreak at McDonald’s

Washington:

US health authorities said Wednesday that chopped onions used by McDonald’s caused an e.Coli outbreak that killed 90 people.

“The likely source of this outbreak is fresh chopped onions served on McDonald’s quarter-pounders and other menu items,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

These particular onions were supplied by Taylor Farms, which has issued a voluntary recall. McDonald’s also pulled out the onion.

Restaurants in more than a dozen U.S. states temporarily pulled burgers from their menus this month amid a related outbreak.

The number of infected people now stands at 90, of which 27 required hospitalization, and an elderly man died in Colorado.

On Sunday, McDonald’s said it would resume selling Quarter Pounder hamburgers after tests for e.Coli came back negative.

The e.Coli bacteria causes stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting lasting three to four days. Most people recover without requiring treatment, but some develop complications.
