BCPS hosts the HBCU College Fair in Owings Mills

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Hundreds of high school students in Baltimore County were able to see what HBCUs can offer them. They attended the eighth annual HBCU Fair, which was held Wednesday at New Town High School.

There were over 20 historically black colleges and universities. School representatives talked about courses and scholarships. Several schools also offered on-site receptions and scholarship awards.

There were also black brotherhoods and societies there. They encouraged students to apply for scholarships and mentoring programs. And they registered students to vote.

One of the students looking at their future is Ugonma Chike-Kalu, a student representative on the Baltimore County School Board. She is a student at the Western School of Technology and Environmental Science.

“It was a great time here,” he says. “I had the opportunity to meet with many representatives from Howard University, Coppin State and even the Educational Foundation about scholarship opportunities.”

Ugonma says he wants to study global health and public policy. If that happens, he will follow in the footsteps of his brothers, a doctor and a pharmacist, both graduates of Howard University’s medical school.

“Being able to talk to (schools) directly provides a unique perspective,” he says. “I think this allowed me to add a few more schools to my college list.”
