CHICAGO — A Naperville woman accused of stealing more than $1,500 worth of merchandise from a home goods store while on temporary leave for allegedly stealing from two other suburban stores is facing felony charges.

Florence Twu, 41, of Naperville, has been charged with one count of burglary and one count of retail theft, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Wednesday in a news release.

The charges stem from an incident that prosecutors say allegedly occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Home Depot at 2900 Audrey Avenue in Naperville.

Prosecutors said they were called to the store just after 6 p.m. after a report of an alleged theft at the retail store. Through investigation, officers determined that Twu allegedly entered the store and placed more than 50 items worth approximately $1,630 in her backpack and cart before leaving without paying for the purchases.

According to prosecutors, when she was confronted by a loss prevention officer in the store’s parking lot, she allegedly left her shopping cart and ran to her car with her backpack. Naperville police officers then took her into custody in the parking lot.

Prosecutors said that at the time of the alleged theft, Twu was on pretrial release for allegedly stealing more than $300 worth of merchandise from Walmart and Nordstrom Rack stores in Naperville in June.

At her first hearing on Wednesday, Twu was released on the new charges, as required by law, but after the hearing, the state filed a motion to revoke her pretrial release in her previous case, which was granted by Judge Mia McPherson.

“Judge McPherson’s order to revoke pretrial release and order Ms. Twu detained pending trial sends a clear message that pre-trial release conditions are not optional,” Berlin said. “These conditions are a court order and must be followed. In DuPage County, if you are granted pretrial release and violate these conditions, my office will do everything in our power to ensure that you will remain in compliance with the Court’s orders in the future, up to and including pretrial detention. I commend the Naperville Police Department for their work on this case and for their continued efforts to keep our businesses and customers safe. I also thank Assistant State Attorneys Anna Derkacz, Adam Frahm and Michael Pingaj for their work in securing charges against Ms. Twu.”

Twu is scheduled to return to court on November 25 for arraignment.
