Former Kaizer Chiefs coach and captain Patrick Mabedi was fired as Malawi coach on Tuesday.

Mabedi’s departure from the Flames midway through his two-year contract came after five straight losses.

The former Black Leopards assistant coach’s misfortune could open up opportunities for several high-profile figures.

Finally, the Flames will travel to Burundi for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on November 15.

The Malawi FA has since suggested hiring a caretaker coach while waiting for a permanent caretaker.

SuperSport.com has scanned the Malawi football fraternity for potential candidates who could fill the void left by Mabedi’s departure.

THABO SENONG

Senong arrived in Malawi two weeks ago to take up the lucrative role of FIFA talent development coach at the Luwinga Inclusive Academy.

The Malawi FA may be tempted to temporarily entrust the Flames into the capable hands of former Sekhukhune United assistant coach.

Senong is no stranger to senior football. He was responsible for Lesotho and was part of the formed Bafana Bafana.

KALISTO PASUWA

Zimbabwe has always been linked with the Flames job. However, the man who was once considered a potential Chiefs prospect insists he is happy in his current job with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

Pasuwa was the manager of Team Malawi after winning five consecutive TNM Super League titles.

Piotr MPONDA

The former Leopards coach and captain has been the revelation of this TNM Super League season. He has led the Silver Strikers to the top of the league, where they are seven points clear with six games remaining.

JOHN MADUKA

The PSL legend is at the helm of Royal AM and continues to prove himself. The former Blomfontein Celtic captain has not been involved with football in his homeland since 2005, when he retired from the Flames.

Maduka is a loyal servant, so the chances of him leaving Royal AM are slim. However, in football, never say never.

MCDONALD MTETEMERA

The former Flames defender is unknown outside Malawi’s footballing borders. However, he proved his worth last season in a poor Chitipa United side that finished in the top four.

Mtetemera failed to repeat his heroics at his new club, Crerk Sporting Club, where he was suspended due to poor results.

FAM may find it a more convenient temporary option.
