One person killed in I-95 crash in Portsmouth, latest fatality after vehicle crossed median

According to New Hampshire State Police, a man died on Interstate 95 Wednesday evening after crossing the median and hitting another car. It was the second one fatal accident and third serious accident involving a vehicle crossing the I-95 median on the Seacoast earlier this month.

“The initial investigation revealed that a southbound vehicle crossed the median, became airborne and struck another northbound vehicle,” police wrote on social media.

The identity of the driver who crossed the median and died was not immediately released. Police said the northbound driver who was struck suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. There were no passengers in any of the vehicles.

State Police said the crash occurred before 7 p.m. Wednesday evening near mile marker 13 on I-95 in Portsmouth, causing northbound lanes to be closed while authorities responded and investigated.

Due to the investigation, blocked northbound traffic was redirected off Exit 3, according to police.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation is considering installing barriers along Interstate 95, a spokesman for the state agency said after a fatal collision in Greenland. No plans for potential installation or cost estimates have been finalized.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

On Thursday morning, state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Lane did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
