The former editor of RTÉ’s Northern dies at the age of 72

The Prime Minister of Ireland has paid tribute to veteran Irish journalist and broadcaster David Davin-Power, who has died aged 72.

He began his career with Irish public broadcaster RTÉ in the 1980s and helped launch its flagship weekday radio program Morning Ireland.

In the early 1990s he was transferred to Belfast as RTÉ’s Northern Editor.

Over the years he reported on the twists and turns of the peace process, which culminated in the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Prime Minister Simon Harris expressed “deep sadness” at his death, describing him as “a consummate professional, a thorough journalist and a gentleman.”

He said Davin-Power was a “trusted name” and an excellent editor who reported on Northern Ireland at a “pivotal moment in history”.

Tánaiste (Irish Deputy Prime Minister) Micheál Martin said Davin-Power’s contribution to journalism was “immense” and his life was dedicated to public service broadcasting.

“Over forty years, David chronicled many of the stories that shaped modern Ireland,” Martin said.

“He had a unique ability to explain even the most complicated stories, making the news accessible to everyone.”

After his time in Belfast, Davin-Power returned to Dublin, where he worked as a political correspondent for RTÉ for 16 years before retiring in 2017.

In addition to his role at RTÉ, Mr Davin-Power has worked for commercial broadcasters including Century Radio, Newstalk and Virgin Media.

He was also a columnist for the Times Ireland Edition.

He left a wife and five children.
