Fayette County Public Schools is hosting the second annual Bus-a-Treat event

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – The neighborhood will soon be taken over by trick-or-treaters, but if you’re still looking for a place to take the kids, Fayette County Public Schools is hosting its second annual Bus-a-Treat event.

“We spent two whole months fundraising to get it all together,” Deltoria Sharp told Bus Monitor.

Sharp has served as a bus supervisor for Fayette County Public Schools for 21 years.

“We just wanted to find something safe and fun for the kids because everyone is doing ‘trunk or treat,’ so we thought, ‘Let’s do a ‘Bus-a-Treat,'” Sharp said.

Bus-a-Treat started last year at a bus garage on Liberty Road. Over 1,500 people attended the event and due to its success they are running it again this year with a few minor changes to parking and adding some fun.

This year’s event will feature a Lexington Fire Department smokehouse, a fire truck, a bouncy house and a hot dog stand.

“We never thought in a million years, even in the first year, it would be as big as it was, and it was a huge success,” said bus driver Joe Haskins.

Vickie Perkins has been transporting students to and from school for over twenty years and treats each student as if she were her own.

“We’ve been transporting these kids since they were little babies and we’ve been able to watch them grow up in the community and everything,” Perkins said.

She said the goal of the event is to unite the community and keep students off the streets and out of trouble.

“It’s just our way of saying, hey, we care, we’re here, we’re not just a bus driver, these are our kids,” Perkins explained.

The Bus-a-Treat event will be held at the Fayette County Public Schools bus garage on Liberty Road from 6 to 8 p.m. on Halloween.
