Cedar Springs school employee charged in child pornography case

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Cedar Springs Public Schools employee has been indicted on child pornography charges.

Mark Labelle, 35, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of aggravated possession of child sexual abuse material and using a computer to commit a crime.

Court documents show that on August 24, Kent County sheriff’s deputies received a call from Labelle’s wife who told them she had seen child pornography on his cell phone. Investigators said they didn’t find any explicit images of children on his phone, but did find them on his laptop.

Court documents say Labelle “admitted to being addicted to pornography” when questioned by deputies.

Labelle was arrested Tuesday, but has been on administrative leave from Cedar Springs Public Schools since learning of the investigation on Aug. 26. In a letter to families, the district said it had not contacted students directly. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office told News 8 he was a maintenance worker for the county.

The district added that there is no indication that any Cedar Springs students were involved.

Labelle is scheduled to return to court on November 13 for a hearing. Each of the charges against him are crimes punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
