The 15-year-old shooting victim on Helsinki Drive in Augusta has been identified

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A 15-year-old is dead following a shooting in Richmond County on Wednesday evening, according to officials.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office told us Thursday that Devayn Grissam of Augusta died at 7:07 p.m.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the 2300 block of Helsinki Drive in reference to shots fired at 6:23 p.m., causing one person to fall.

When deputies arrived, they found Grissam had been shot at least once.

According to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen, he was taken by emergency medical services to Wellstar/MCG, where he died from his injuries.

While deputies were at the hospital, another person arrived with at least one gunshot wound, deputies said. They are unsure whether the two victims who were shot were involved in the same shooting or a different incident.

Investigators were on scene at 9 p.m. and had no additional information at that time, deputies said.

Also on Thursday, Richmond County deputies say so is investigating the suspicious death of a 59-year-old man on Lumpkin Road.

Shooting takes place in the middle an outbreak of violent crime in which more than 170 people were killed in the CSRA in just over two years.

The crime outbreak has hit communities large and small, but Augusta, the region’s largest city, has been hit particularly hard.

The authorities do blamed most of the problem on gangs.
