Launch of an app that connects students looking for work with homeowners needing help with household chores in Waco

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A new app is launching in Waco, connecting college students looking to earn extra money with homeowners needing help with household chores and odd jobs at an affordable price.

Spare Hand students have already had a lot of success in College Station, home of Texas A&M, and Lubbock, home of Texas Tech, and Baylor was their next stop.

The founder and CEO is 21-year-old Zach Miller of Southlake.

“Our mission is two-fold: We offer homeowners an easy solution to complete their to-do lists while providing students with flexible work opportunities that fit their school schedules,” Miller said.

Students can register by providing the application with their university email address.

They then set their own hourly rate, depending on the position.

Homeowners can then select a student based on their bio, price and availability.

Student services include everything from dog walking and pet sitting to gardening, gardening, elder care, child care and holiday assistance.

Miller says his students have already installed lights in many places, charging about $30 an hour, a fraction of what many companies charge.

The founder says it’s a win-win.

“Starting with homeowners, it’s hard to find affordable and convenient services,” Miller said. “Now people are making a fortune and waiting weeks to come and check out a project, and on the other hand, it’s really hard for us students to find a job, especially one in which we have experience and that we really enjoy, combining these two things, in we basically just bring communities together and help everyone.”

The company has already paid out $125,000 to students.

Miller said Waco seemed like the next best stop.

“We came to Waco because, like College Station and Lubbock, the entire city is very involved in the school,” he said.
