Fireman Saint Jerzy is recovering after the crash of a historic fire truck

ST. GEORGE, Utah – A St. Patrick’s Day firefighter George was still in the hospital after the ceremonial 1940s fire truck he was driving lost its brakes and was hit by an SUV on Wednesday.

In Wednesday morning’s crash at the corner of Deserts Edge Drive and Desert Canyons Parkway – about a half-mile from the Utah-Arizona border – a 76-year-old fire truck lost its brakes and collided with an SUV. Firefighter from St. George, driving the ceremonial vehicle, has since been hospitalized following minor back surgery and a ticket for running a stop sign.

The Washington County sheriff’s deputy leading the investigation and the St. Fire Department chief. George told Fox 13 that the 1948 Ahrens Fox fire pump is an exhibit that was on display Tuesday at the grand opening of a new, state-of-the-art 13,000-square-foot building Art Station and Training Center in the Desert Canyons area, about a mile and a half from St. airports George.

According to the deputy, the firefighter was driving on the downhill portion of Desert Edge Drive toward the Desert Canyons thoroughfare when the brakes failed. The engine blew through a stop sign, and a Ford SUV traveling on the parkway struck the driver of a 1948 fire truck head-on.

The driver of the SUV, the only passenger, was not injured, and firefighter Brandon Redd was transported to St. Regional Hospital. George.

On Thursday, he underwent a procedure during which special cement was implanted in his vertebrae and was scheduled to return home on Thursday evening.

Redd also received a ticket for running a stop sign.

He also said that even if a driver loses his brakes and control, he is still liable for an accident if he passes a stop sign or light. He added that the circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.

Fire Chief St. George Robert Stoker says the historic fire truck is history. Total loss.
