Political protests are deeply rooted in the Day of the Dead, a crossroads of American tradition

On Saturday, two groups of 10-foot-tall skeleton dolls will approach each other on opposite sides of the U.S.-Mexico border for a symbolic embrace in honor of families whose loved ones lost their lives trying to reach America. Día de Los Muertos, an indigenous, primarily Mexican holiday celebrated on the first two days of November, is widely considered a time for families to honor the memory of loved ones who have passed away. The Menendez brothers’ effort for freedom is another step forward

Erik and Lyle Menendez’s bid to be released from prison gained momentum Thursday after Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón sent letters to California Gov. Gavin Newsom expressing “strong support” for a clemency. The letters are similar and both cite “credible allegations” from the father of sexual and physical abuse. The letters also cite a “commitment to rehabilitation” that Gascón said makes the brothers ideal candidates for clemency. Lyle was 21 and Erik 18 when they fatally shot their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. “During his 34 years of incarceration, Mr. Menendez worked hard to turn his life around,” each letter reads. Heidi Klum is throwing the biggest Halloween party in over twenty years. But while she may now be the undisputed “Queen of Halloween,” it wasn’t always like that.
