BACKGROUND: 200 unqualified teachers certified under Houston-based $1 million cheating program

Three former Houston ISD officials are expected to appear before a judge Friday morning.

According to the Harris County Attorney’s Office, the scheme, reportedly worth more than $1 million, provided teaching positions to people who did not meet certification requirements and falsified their qualifications.

Records show that approximately 430 fake tests have been conducted and over 210 unqualified teachers have been certified under this program and are currently practicing or practicing in Texas public schools and counties throughout the state.

According to the DA, a total of five people took part in the investigation Kim OggBut three former HISD employees taken into custody. Vincent Grayson57, was the head boys basketball coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston ISD accused of being a central element in the fraud.

Nicholas Newton, On January 35, the deputy principal of the school where Grayson worked was also arrested LaShonda Roberts39 years old, another assistant principal at Jack Yates High School. Officials say she is accused of hiring nearly 100 teachers.

Two other defendants in this scheme, Tywana Gilford Mason, 51, former VA director/certifying officer at the Houston Training and Education Center, and Darian Nikole Wilhite, 22, vice chancellor at TACTIX, have not been arrested.

Roberts and Grayson were released on bail on Wednesday, while Newton remains in jail as of Friday morning.
