Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash on I-95

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-95 at mile marker 81.5 Thursday afternoon.

Elisabeth Mary Rumford, 28, of Richmond, struck the rear of a Ram 3500 service truck that was stopped in traffic. The vehicle was then pushed into a Ford pickup truck.

State police say Rumford was driving in the left lane and did not notice traffic slowing due to a vehicle fire farther north.

Rumford died from her injuries at the scene. The driver of the service car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. The pickup’s drive was not damaged.

The crash closed the northbound lanes near the Route 1 exit (mile marker 81) for several hours.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
