This year, around 15,000 students from 93 schools in Chattogram participated in the book reading initiative, of which 5,503 students excelled in the evaluation stage and were selected for awards

Bishwo Shahitto Kendro felicitated 5,503 students from 93 schools in Chattogram at an awards ceremony for its annual book reading program.

The event, held this morning (November 1) at the Chattogram City Corporation Municipal Model High School and College, was an opportunity to celebrate the young readers who distinguished themselves in the evaluation phase of the initiative.

For 46 years, Bishwo Shahitto Kendro has been running reading and development programs for school and college students across Bangladesh. Currently, approximately 250,000 students from 1,700 educational institutions across the country participate in the program.

This year, around 15,000 students from 93 schools in Chattogram participated in the book reading initiative, of which 5,503 students excelled in the evaluation stage and were selected for awards.

Mohammad Tofayel Islam, Commissioner, Chattogram Division, addressed the event as the chief guest. Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, President of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro; Parveen Mahmud, social activist and confidant of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro; and Samrine Bokhari, business director of Grameenphone in Chattogram, appeared at the event as special guests, among others.

Addressing the students, Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed emphasized the importance of reading, saying: “We have given you books full of beautiful dreams. Each of these books is a treasure trove of knowledge. New knowledge is essential for the development of every nation.”

Parveen Mahmud said, “Nothing can replace reading books that will brighten your life.”

Samrine Bokhari, representing Grameenphone, said: “Grameenphone has been supporting the Bishwo Shahitto Kendro book reading program for almost twenty years. We hope to help cultivate an enlightened generation across Bangladesh.”

Prizes were distributed in four categories – ‘Shagoto’, ‘Shubhechchha’, ‘Abhinandan’ and ‘Shera Pathok’ at each grade level.

Among the participants, 2,004 students received the Shagoto award, 1,671 students received the Shubhechchha award, 1,740 received the Abhinandan award and 88 received the Shera Pathok award.

The event was hosted by Mesbah Uddin Ahmed Suman, Co-Director of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro, and Grameenphone sponsored the program and the winning books.
