Schools rule! Kids are putting down roots at Concord High

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Concord High School is changing the way students learn in the classroom by moving away from traditional teaching methods.

Students develop their roots by learning how to support plant roots.

“It grows 25 pounds of fresh produce a month,” said Jill Snyder, Concord High School principal.

Concord High students produce fresh nutrients vertically on flexible farms. It’s an efficient agricultural technology.

“Our school must be able to provide students with the opportunity to learn outside the traditional classroom,” Snyder said.

Students expand their knowledge in the classroom by learning about hydroponics – growing plants in water instead of soil.

“It’s fun and different because I’m used to planting in the ground,” Hayden Stanhope said.

From the ground to the cafe:

“It’s also rewarding to see people eat things you’ve created,” Stanhope said.

The products are created and consumed by high school students.

“We order a taco bar every day and we use lettuce every day,” Snyder said.

Building on their education, mobile indoor hydroponics also allows students to grow fresh food year-round.

“Tower water farming is really effective,” Stanhope said.

The program continues to grow as more students become interested in taking classes.
