Bodycam video shows NOPD officer-involved shooting in Mid City

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Police Department has released body camera video officer-involved shooting on September 8.

Officers were responding to a report of a domestic violence incident on Bienville Street in Mid-City, where they encountered 29-year-old Justin Martin, who had reportedly attacked his girlfriend.

“Natives are highly volatile. They are charged with emotions. They are between two people who have deep feelings for each other. This always creates a highly volatile mindset,” said NOPD Chief Anne Kirkpatrick.

According to police, Martin ran into his home after they arrived and returned a short time later with a gun. Officers instructed Martin to drop his gun, but he allegedly pointed it at them, prompting officers to fire, striking him in the abdomen. According to the police, Martin managed to fire several shots.

In a video released on Friday (November 1), one of the officers who arrived at the scene can be seen using his bare hands to stop Martin’s bleeding.

Chief Kirkpatrick praised the officers’ actions.

“The officer’s training and attitude to be calm and intentional. Keeping his head on was something we were all very proud of,” Kirkpatrick said. “I think these officers were incredibly brave and, as you can see, and compassionate. You can show courage and compassion.”

New Orleans police say officers responded appropriately, consistent with their policies.

Martin, who has already left the hospital, faces a number of charges.
