Nonsokwa lawyer, Mgbekeonye, writes to Imo CP, IG maintains his life is in danger

The lawyer of troubled Imo radio broadcaster, Chinonso Uba, popularly known as Nonsokwa, has raised the alarm, alleging that unknown callers have called and threatened him with death if he refuses to drop the case.

Lawyer CK Mgbekeonye disclosed this in a petition addressed to the Imo State Commissioner of Police and Inspector General of Police, saying his life was at risk for his legal involvement in the matter.

The lawyer, in a petition written through CK Mgbekeonye and Shekinah Chambers, stated that since representing the broadcaster on October 23, 2024 before the Owerri Magistrate’s Court sitting in connection with the charges of conspiracy, high treason and arson brought against him by the state police command, receiving phone calls from strangers.

Mgbekeonye suggested that after appearing on behalf of the accused, he started receiving calls from strange people with hidden phone numbers, warning him not to pursue the case or blame himself.

He further stated in the petition that unknown callers, as if they had not dealt with the threat, accosted him while he was returning from his office along Toronto-MCC Road Owerri on Saturday, October 26, with tinted black windows of a Toyota Hilux, that after sensing a possible safety hazard, he turned into Toronto Police Headquarters.

“The attackers, upon learning that they had failed to eliminate me, brazenly called me again on a still unknown number and threatened to withdraw my legal representation for Uba.

“I am a legal practitioner performing my professional duties within the bounds of the law and as such, I should not be subjected to any form of inhumane treatment or threats to life in the performance of my professional duties,” Mgbekeonye said.

Uba’s lawyer informed that due to what he has observed over the last few days, his life and the lives of his colleagues in the chamber are in danger.

“Sir, taking into account the above facts as explained, we hereby request your urgent intervention in this matter before the attackers manage to carry out their threat,” he appealed.
