Former Packers coach Mike Holmgren will advance in the Hall of Fame process

Holmgren led two teams to three Super Bowl appearances. He also made it this far in the selection process last year.

Super Bowl winner Mike Holmgren is among nine Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalists.

Holmgren advanced to the next stage of the selection process along with Bill Arnsparger, Tom Coughlin, Chuck Knox, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan and Clark Shaughnessy. Holmgren also moved to this phase of the process last year.

One finalist in the coaches category will be selected on November 19.

Holmgren coached the Packers from 1992 to 1998, leading the team to six playoff appearances, including three NFC Central titles, three NFC Championship appearances and consecutive Super Bowls. The Packers won Super Bowl XXXI during the season in New Orleans, but lost Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego.

He trained Seattle Seahawks from 1999 to 2008 and led that team to its first Super Bowl after the 2005 season. Seattle lost to Pittsburgh.

Holmgren was a highly sought-after assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers when Packers general manager Ron Wolf hired him to coach the Packers. In Holmgren’s first year, the team was 9-7 after going 4-12 the previous season. Holmgren was something of a Favre whisperer, helping turn raw, inexperienced point guard Brett Favre into one of the best in the game. Favre is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Holmgren coached the Packers from 75-35 and his career record is 161-111.

Holmgren was the general manager of the Seahawks and president of the Cleveland Browns. He is a member Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame i Seattle Seahawks Ring of Honor.
