Manvel residents are wondering how two officers responded to a call about an injured dog

Manvel residents are wondering how two officers responded to a call about an injured dog

They say officers left the dog behind, saying it couldn’t be picked up for at least two days.

He spoke to FOX 26 Manvel Chief of Police Keith Traylor.

SUGGESTED: PEMEX refinery lawsuit filed over fatal gas leak last month

He believes the officers’ response to the dog was unfortunate and new procedures are in place so something like this won’t happen again.

“He was probably thrown out of the car or hit by a car,” said Cindy Cortinas with Lone Star Pawz Rescue.

No one knows exactly what happened to the puppy, now named Jackson. But it was clear that he desperately needed help.

“I knew he probably had a broken leg and a head injury, and I called the police at Manvel,” Cindy said.

“The second policeman came with a leash, so the dog was lying here and the policeman put the leash on incorrectly. She put it over his ear so the dog could easily slip out,” said 14-year-old Jackson Cernoch.

Last Friday, two police officers told Michelle Coates that the dog could not be collected until Monday.

“There was no one to do animal control and that was it,” Michelle said. “They didn’t go in there and bring him anything. Jackson was the only one who could go deep there, as close as he was. This dog wanted no one else but Jackson.”

Lone Star Pawz Rescue saw a Facebook post about the dog and took him to the vet.

“She just put a leash on him, picked him up and carried him out,” Cindy said. “He never tried to yell at us. Even though he was in a lot of pain and his leg was hanging down.”

Jackson underwent leg surgery and is currently recovering. He is in a temporary home and I hope he will find his permanent home soon.

Cindy says the police response was unacceptable.

“I really do. We now have two animal control officers. Not one, but two,” she said.

Chief Traylor says they are in the process of building an animal control unit from scratch and started last November.

Since the incident, both of his animal control officers have been certified and now have on-call procedures.

Lone Star Pawz named the dog Jackson.

“They asked for my name, I said it was Jackson. So they named the dog after me,” he said.

The best part of this story is that Jackson is well on his way to a happy life.

“And my son has a dog named after him,” Michelle added.
