Manor ISD holds vigil following the shooting death of a student on campus by a classmate

Family, friends and classmates remembered a Manor High School student who was stabbed to death by another student on campus this week.

Court ISD held a candlelight vigil for 18-year-old Darrin Loving.

“It’s a tragedy. There is no other word for it, it is a tragedy,” said Sam Samaripa, a Manor ISD grandfather.

Hundreds of people shared a tearful and emotional moment as they placed candles in front of a memorial honoring 18-year-old Darrin Loving.

“It was the first time I had to do this and it was very touching, almost like I knew this young man,” said Rosemary Samaripa, a Grandparent from Manor ISD.

“The community needs to come together after something like this. The community needs to come together,” says Sam.

Manor police say it was Darrin Loving stabbed to death by 18-year-old Mac Brown Mbanwei during a fight. Mbanwei is currently in the Travis County Jail, where he faces a first-degree murder charge.

“I can only imagine what these parents are going through, and I think it’s two-fold. The other gentleman I feel sorry for is a young man and it’s just a tragedy,” says Sam.

A photo of Loving was shared during the vigil, and a prayer was held in the center of the stadium, with some kneeling to show respect.

“The young men who gave up playing football to honor this young man, their classmate, was overwhelming to me,” Rosemary says.

During the vigil, district officials asked parents to work with their children and also volunteer time on campus to bring the community together.

“To see all these people from different backgrounds and hear the school board president speak, we have to come together,” Rosemary says.

The district has made resources available to students and staff to cope with the loss.
