The world’s largest captive crocodile, Cassius, has died at a wildlife reserve in Australia.

Marineland Melanesia crocodile habitat and gift shop published on Facebook about the loss of Cassius.

“It is with deep sadness that we share the death of our beloved partner Cassius,” the post read. “He was more than just a crocodile, he was a valued member of our family and provided joy and companionship to his best friend George for over 37 years.”

The post said Cassius’ condition had been deteriorating since October 15. Habitat also thanked everyone who visited Cassius during his lifetime and “showed kindness along the way.”

Cassius, a saltwater crocodile, was estimated to be at least 110 years old. BBCbut no one is sure.

“He was very old and was believed to live longer than a wild crocodile. We will miss Cassius greatly, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”

In 2011 Cassius made history with Guinness record as the largest crocodile in captivity, measuring 17 feet.
