Someone has to win in this NFC South rivalry when two teams that have combined to lose 11 of their last 12 games face each other on Sunday, with the New Orleans Saints traveling to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers.

Saints’ losing streak extended to six games last week, but Derek Carr returns from injury this week. My picks for Saints vs. The Panthers believe there will be a resurgence of the Saints offense with Carr’s return.

My analysis

It seems like a lifetime ago New Orleans Saints they were the hottest offense in the NFL. Against these they scored 47 points and 379 yards Carolina Panthers in Week 1 and then continued with 44 points and 432 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. However, they have averaged just 15.7 points and 290.8 yards in their last six games.

That’s right, three of those games were no Derek Carr at the quarterback’s. And now he’s back just in time to face the worst defense in the NFL. The Panthers are scoring an incredible 33.9 points per game. They are on track to break the NFL record for points allowed in a season, which dates back to 1981 when the Baltimore Colts allowed 33.3 points per game.

Only two of the eight teams the Panthers have faced this season have failed to score 27 points against them, and those were the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders in Weeks 2 and 3. However, even these teams performed well above their season averages. with the Raiders scoring four points more than average and the Chargers eight more points than average.

The Saints average 23.1 ppg and 28.0 rpg with Carr being the starting point guard. While this may seem like an obvious upgrade to the passing game, Carr’s presence makes a huge difference in the Saints running game. They averaged 147.5 yards per game in the first four games of the season, then 85.3 in the final four games. Alvin Kamara will be a huge fan of Carr’s return.

The Panthers have the worst rushing defense in the NFL and have allowed 28 runs of over 10 yards. The Saints will be able to move the ball with relative ease, and Carr’s return will help them have a balanced offense and the ability to complete passes with touchdowns rather than field goals or turnovers. I love the Saints because they can score at least 27 points on Sunday.

To be consistent with our best guess, I’ll stay true to the belief that Carr’s return will help Alvin Kamara and the running game a ton. The Panthers are allowing 154.6 rushing yards per game and have allowed seven different running backs to exceed 70 yards on the ground – including Kamara. Kamara averaged 90.5 rushing yards per game in his first four games with Carr at quarterback.

Finally, I’ll throw in a speeding prop on the other side. Czuba Hubbard he has dominated the defense since the game against the Saints in Week 1, in which he saw only six carries. He has averaged 17 carries per game since Week 2, and the Saints themselves have a very poor defense. Hubbard will be the mainstay of the Panthers’ offense.
