Former Delta Deputy Governor Utuama is dead

Former Deputy Governor of Delta State, Amos Utuama, has died at the age of 77.

Utuama is said to have died in Warri, Delta State on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness.

The late former lieutenant governor was a renowned law teacher who distinguished himself as justice commissioner and state attorney general from 1999 to 2007.

He later became the deputy governor of the state from 2007 to 2015 under former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Following his death, the Governor of Delta, Sheriff Oborevwori, sent his condolences to the family.

“The deceased was a world-class academic scholar whose teaching and research activities made enormous contributions to the development of the Nigerian legal profession and jurisprudence,” the statement read.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I mourn the death of a gentleman, scholar and astute politician, Professor Amos Agbe Utuama, SAN, who died on Saturday in Warri.

“I received the devastating news of his death with great shock. He was a gentleman politician and scholar who distinguished himself in the service of his people, first as Justice Commissioner and State Attorney General, and later as the State’s Lieutenant Governor.

“In all his service to the state and country, Prof. Utuama has demonstrated commitment to the unity and development of the state,” he said.
