A Columbus police officer died in an off-duty accident

According to the president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 9, Brian Steel, a Columbus police officer died in an off-duty accident that occurred on Saturday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that the Capital Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 9 announces the death of one of our esteemed members as a result of an off-duty incident,” Steel said in a statement. “Tonight we mourn the loss of a dedicated officer and valued friend, colleague and public servant whose absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him and by the community he faithfully served.”

Steel added: “This officer, whose life was dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of others, leaves behind a loving family and countless colleagues who will remember him for his commitment, integrity and dedication to duty. His passing is a profound loss to our Lodge, the Columbus Police family and the residents whose lives he sought to protect every day.”

Steel demanded respect for the privacy of the officer’s family and said: “Our hearts and condolences are with them and we stand ready to offer them any support they need. We will provide further details regarding bereavement arrangements as they become available.”

The FOP has not yet revealed the identity of the officer.
