We’ve all seen them on the road, but have you ever wondered how much Sixty60 checkers drivers earn money?

RELATED | Will Checkers Sixty60 take to the skies?

In typical South African fashion, it’s a little more complicated than you might think…

Food app #1

Checkers Sixty60 has taken South Africa by storm since its launch in 2019.

It is the No. 1 grocery app in South Africa, with over five million downloads and available in 505 locations.

Their turquoise bicycles have changed the way South Africans shop, providing consumers with a more efficient and convenient way to get groceries home.

While this has made life more convenient for millions of people, have you ever wondered how much a Sixty60 driver earns per month?

Recently, there have been complaints and allegations about the treatment of birth, men and women.

One of the biggest criticisms is that this is the case NO considered employees and underpaid.

According to TopAutoSixty60 delivery drivers are considered “independent contractors” and not permanent employees of the brand.

“Drivers are independent contractors; Drivers are paid on the basis of a service contract and are therefore not employed,” the company says.

Checkers outsources all logistics of its delivery platform to its partner, Pingoa joint venture between Shoprite (the parent company of Checkers) and RTT Logistics.

Criticized

The practice was sharply criticized by Democratic Alliance MP and lawyer Michael Bagraim, who said it could promote risky behavior and put pressure on cyclists to spend more work on the road than they probably should.

“They receive no benefits and are not protected by our labor laws,” Bagraim said.

“This forces alleged workers to make as many trips as possible, putting their lives at risk,” he said GroundUp.

Fired for dealing with difficulties

Meanwhile, My broadband connection reported about the payments received by these drivers, and the former operator of Sixty60 told the whole truth.

According to an anonymous person who worked at the Checkers store in Heiderand Mall in Mossel Bay from September 2022 to February 2024, when they were allegedly laid off after resolving issues faced by drivers on their delivery team, passengers typically earned around R7 600 per month.

BUT!

Checkers Sixty60 drivers allegedly encountered difficulties when Pingo announced the removal R350 the minimum daily rate that drivers would receive regardless of the number of journeys made.

This led to a workers’ strike and the minimum daily wage was restored.

An anonymous former employee explained that typical monthly earnings of R7,600 included this daily fee of R350.

Cover your own fuel costs

Meanwhile, drivers allegedly have to cover their own costs own fuel costs and bike rental expenses.

“Fuel costs were R3,200 per month and bike rental was R400 per week, which meant the rider had R2,800 net monthly earnings.”

Without the minimum fee, this sum would be much lower.

The source said that if passengers make 13 or more deliveries, they will earn between R30 and R35 per delivery, and if they do not make 13, they will be paid the minimum fare.

According to My broadband connectionthere was supposedly a minimal fee REMOVED again shortly after the first strike, leading to another stay-away strike.
